AWARD: Four whole human genome sequences

OBJECTIVE: To support capacity development for African genomic science by providing exposure to NGS and data analysis 

RESEARCH GRANT: One Grant Applicant will receive from Illumina, at no cost, Whole Genome Sequencing Services for four human genomes (the Illumina Sequencing Grant or the Grant).  The Specifications of the Grant services comprise: receipt and QC of DNA samples in UK; library preparation and sequencing for Research Use Only to an average of a minimum of 30x aligned read depth; alignment, variant calling and annotation of each genome according to Illumina current methods; return of data including BAM and gVCF files with annotation.

ELIGIBILITY: (1) Registered participant at the SASHG2013 Congress (2) Researcher (or group) working on the African continent with some experience in analysing human genomic data, (3) Based at a recognised tertiary institution, science council or recognised research organization, (4) Access to four human genome samples, with all necessary authorizations and consents (from donors, IRBs, and other applicable entities) for sequencing under the Illumina Sequencing Grant, (5) Grant Application submitted in accordance with instructions and agreement to Grant terms and conditions

GRANT APPLICATIONS:  Submit Grant Application in accordance with the instructions on the Grant Application Form. Applications to be submitted to Michele Ramsay (SASHG), Subject Heading: SASHG2013 Illumina Competition, and sent to Zodwa.Mthembu@wits.ac.za by close of business on 8 November 2013.

SELECTION:  Grant Applications will be evaluated based on criteria such as: scientific merit, relevance to Africa and contribution to capacity development, motivation and impact, intent to publish, and researcher’s experience. The successful Grant Applicant will be announced in a SASHG News Letter.

TERMS AND CONDITIONS OF ILLUMINA SEQUENCING GRANT

Please read the following terms carefully.  By submitting this Grant Application you agree to these terms for yourself and on behalf of your Institution/Company.  “You” and “your” shall refer to you personally or your Institution, as applicable.  If you do not agree to these terms then do not submit a Grant Application.

To have your Grant Application considered, it must:

  • Be in English
  • Be complete
  • Be an original work
  • Be accompanied by your curriculum vitae; students should also include c.v. of supervisor
  1. You  agree to obtain all authorizations and permissions from your academic or non-profit research institution (Institution) that are required to allow you to submit this Grant Application and, if selected, receive the award of Illumina Sequencing Grant.
  2. You acknowledge that you meet the following eligibility criteria: (1) Registered participant at the SASHG2013 Congress, (2) Researcher (or group) working on the African continent with some experience in analysing human genomic data, (3) Based at a recognised tertiary institution, science council or recognised research organization, (4) Access to four human genome samples, with all necessary authorizations and consents (from donors, IRBs, and other applicable entities) for sequencing under the Illumina Sequencing Grant.
  3. You agree that submission of this Grant Application and, if selected, your receipt of the Illumina Sequencing Grant does not violate any rule, policy, or procedures of your Institution.
  4. You acknowledge and agree that any Grant award made hereunder is not being made in exchange for any promise of business to Illumina.
  5. The Grant Review Committee and Illumina will use reasonable efforts to keep your Grant Application submission confidential for a period of 12 months, except that no such obligation will remain once information found in your submission becomes publically available, is already publically available, is provided to the Grant Review Committee or Illumina by third-parties, is developed for or by the Grant Review Committee or Illumina.
  6. You agree that Illumina may contact you for purposes of marketing its products and services.
  7. Once submitted, your Grant Application cannot be returned.
  8. All Grant Application submissions must be made by close of business November 8, 2013.  Late submissions will not be considered.
  9. The Grant Review Committee will have full discretion and the ultimate say in awarding the Illumina Sequencing Grant, and its decision is final. If requested, then you will provide the Grant Review Committee with additional information regarding your Grant Application.
  10. Illumina reserves the right to discontinue or modify this program at any time for any reason.  In the event of discontinuance, Illumina will have no liability to you, your employees and, agents, or team members for such cancellation or modification.
  11. Illumina may refuse to provide the Grant award if Illumina determines in its sole discretion that the provision of such award would likely result in a violation of an applicable law, rule, or policy.
  12. Each applicant is responsible for all of its own costs, and the costs of its employees and agents incurred or that may be incurred in connection with the Illumina Sequencing Grant, including, without limitation, any tax liability and any costs associated with entering into and participating in this program.
  13. IN NO EVENT SHALL ILLUMINA, ITS OFFICERS, DIRECTORS, EMPLOYEES, OR AGENTS, BE LIABLE FOR ANY DIRECT, INDIRECT, INCIDENTAL, SPECIAL, PUNITIVE, OR CONSEQUENTIAL DAMAGES WHATSOEVER ARISING UNDER OR AS A RESULT OF ENTRANCE IN OR PARTICIPATION IN THE GRANT OR GRANT APPLICATION, WHETHER BASED ON WARRANTY, CONTRACT, TORT, STRICT LIABILITY, OR ANY OTHER LEGAL THEORY, AND WHETHER OR NOT ILLUMINA IS ADVISED OF THE POSSIBILITY OF SUCH DAMAGES. THE FOREGOING LIMITATION OF LIABILITY SHALL APPLY TO THE FULLEST EXTENT PERMITTED BY LAW.
  14. ILLUMINA’S TOTAL AND CUMULATIVE LIABILITY ARISING UNDER OR IN CONNECTION WITH THE GRANT OR GRANT APPLICATIONS SHALL IN NO EVENT EXCEED THE TOTAL VALUE OF THE ILLUMINA WHOLE GENOME SEQUENCING SERVICES AWARD UNDER THE GRANT.
  15. Any and all actions, claims, disputes, or controversies relating to the Illumina Sequencing Grant and Grant Applications shall be governed by the law of the State of California, USA, without regard to its conflict-of-laws principles.  By submitting your Grant Application, you expressly consent to the exclusive forum, jurisdiction, and venue of the state and federal courts of San Diego County, California, USA in such actions, claims, disputes, or controversies.
  16. If you are selected to receive the one Illumina Sequencing Grant that will be awarded, then you (or your Institution) will be required to enter into a written Grant Award Agreement with Illumina to set forth the terms and conditions under which the Illumina Sequencing Grant will be performed. If you (or your Institution) do not enter into a written Grant Award Agreement with Illumina, then Illumina will not be required to provide the Grant to you and will reward the Grant to another applicant. Selected terms of a Grant Award Agreement include:
    • Your acknowledgment that the Illumina Whole Genome Sequencing Services are not performed in a clinical laboratory and, therefore, the sequencing data generated are for research use only;
    • Your representation and warranty that the four human genome samples you submit to Illumina under the Grant will have all appropriate consents and approvals necessary for Illumina to perform Illumina Whole Genome Sequencing Services, and that the sequencing data generated and delivered to you by Illumina will not be used for healthcare decisions, diagnosis, treatment and will not be provided to the genome donors;
    • Your agreement to appropriately acknowledge the Illumina Sequencing Grant and the Grant Review Committee in any publication of the sequencing results, and that Illumina will have pre-publication review of publication;
    • Your agreement to submit a research report to Illumina describing the results of your research and how the Illumina Sequencing Grant furthered your research;
    • Illumina’s right to announce your award of the Illumina Sequencing Grant, and use results from your participation in the Illumina Sequencing Grant for marketing purposes; and
    • Your agreement that Illumina will not have any responsibility or liability with respect to any harm or liability that arises through your receipt of the Illumina Sequencing Grant or from use of the sequencing data.
